MagicSchool AI is an AI platform built for teachers. It lives at magicschool.ai and gives educators more than 80 ready-made tools for the work that happens outside the classroom: lesson plans, quizzes, rubrics, IEPs, report card comments, parent emails, and more. Instead of learning prompt engineering, a teacher picks a tool, fills in a few fields, and gets a first draft in seconds.

It is not a student tutoring app, and it is not something you download from an app store. MagicSchool is a web platform you use in a browser, and there is no official Magic School AI app or APK. If you see one offered on a third-party download site, it is not from the company — read our download page before installing anything.

Who made it and how big is it

MagicSchool was founded in Denver by Adeel Khan, a former teacher and school principal. He started it in 2023 after watching teachers struggle to fit new AI tools into already packed schedules. The idea was simple: take the power of generative AI and wrap it in tools that speak a teacher's language, so nobody has to become a prompt expert to save time.

It caught on fast. In June 2024 the company raised a $15 million Series A round led by Bain Capital Ventures, and by early 2026 the platform reported more than 7 million educators using it across 13,000+ schools and districts worldwide. Teachers routinely say it saves them several hours a week on prep and paperwork.

What you can actually do with it

The heart of the platform is its library of teacher tools — 80 and counting. The most-used ones cover the daily grind of teaching:

  • Lesson Plan Generator — builds a lesson around your topic, grade level, and objectives.
  • Quiz and Assessment Builder — multiple-choice quizzes, exit tickets, and formative checks.
  • Rubric Generator — custom rubrics in seconds instead of an evening.
  • IEP Generator — drafts individualized education plans you then refine.
  • Report Card Comments — positive, growth-focused comments at scale.
  • Text Leveler and Differentiation tools — adjust reading difficulty or create tiered assignments for different learners.
  • Professional Email — drafts to parents and administrators in the right tone.

There is also Raina, an AI chatbot built specifically for education that answers teaching questions any time, and MagicStudent — 50+ student-facing tools for AI literacy that run inside teacher-controlled "Student Rooms," so students use AI in a supervised setting. If you want the full tour of the most useful ones, see our guide to the best MagicSchool tools for lesson planning.

How much does it cost

The pricing is straightforward, and the free tier is genuinely usable:

  • Free — $0. Access to all 80+ teacher tools and 50+ student tools, with daily generation limits.
  • Plus — $99.96 per year (about $8.33 a month billed annually, or $12.99 month-to-month). Unlimited generations, full output history, Studio Mode for editing outputs, unlimited quizzes and student rooms.
  • Enterprise — custom pricing. For schools and districts: single sign-on, LMS integrations like Canvas and Schoology, district dashboards, and custom privacy agreements.

Prices can change, so our pricing breakdown walks through each plan and who it makes sense for.

Is it safe for schools to use

This is where MagicSchool stands out from generic AI chatbots. The platform is independently rated by Common Sense Media (a 93–95% privacy rating in recent reviews), is FERPA and COPPA compliant, and says it does not use student or teacher data to train AI models. Student tools run under teacher supervision, and teachers can monitor or pause student access.

That said, it is still AI. Generated lesson plans and IEP drafts need a teacher's eyes before they go anywhere near students — the platform itself positions its outputs as first drafts, not finished work. And with 80+ tools on the dashboard, new users can feel overwhelmed at first; most teachers settle into a handful of favorites quickly.

How to get started

You sign up free on the official website, pick a tool from the dashboard, answer its guiding questions (grade, subject, objective), and hit generate. No installation, no app download — it runs in your browser. Our getting-started guide walks through the first 15 minutes step by step, and the download page explains exactly where the official platform lives and what to avoid.

How it compares to the alternatives

MagicSchool is not the only AI helper for teachers. Eduaide and Diffit cover similar ground with their own tool libraries, and some districts standardize on SchoolAI. The practical difference is breadth: with 80+ teacher tools and several million users, MagicSchool has the largest library and the most classroom-tested workflows. Smaller tools can be simpler to learn, which matters if 80 options sounds like too many.

Then there is the free option many teachers already use: ChatGPT or Gemini directly. They work, but every output starts from a blank prompt, and neither was built with student privacy rules in mind. MagicSchool's guided tools and school-friendly privacy posture are the reason districts approve it where general chatbots get blocked.

Who it is for — and who can skip it

It is for K-12 teachers drowning in prep work, instructional coaches supporting staff, and school leaders looking for an AI tool they can defend to a school board. It is less useful if you only need a chatbot for quick questions — the free tier of any major AI assistant covers that — or if your district already standardized on a competing platform.

The honest summary: MagicSchool does one job well. It turns the repetitive writing and planning tasks of teaching into ten-minute jobs, with privacy guardrails schools actually accept. Teachers who try the free tier usually know within a week whether it earns a place in their routine.

Frequently asked questions

Is MagicSchool AI free?

Yes. The free plan costs nothing and includes all the teacher and student tools, with limits on how many generations you can run. Many teachers never need more.

Is there a Magic School AI app?

No official app or APK exists. It is a web platform used in a browser. Unofficial "Magic School AI APK" downloads on third-party sites are not from the company and should be treated as untrusted.

How is it different from ChatGPT for teachers?

ChatGPT is a blank chat box — you have to engineer every prompt yourself. MagicSchool gives you pre-built, education-specific tools with guided fields, plus privacy protections and student-safe modes that a general chatbot does not have.

Can students use it directly?

Only through teacher-managed Student Rooms, where the teacher chooses the tools and monitors activity. Students do not get open access on their own.

Who owns MagicSchool AI?

Do the lesson plan outputs actually line up with state standards, or do you end up rewriting half of it anyway?

They're a strong starting point but I always tweak. The time saved is real though — what took me an hour now takes fifteen minutes.

Agreed. I feed it my exact standard code and the alignment is usually about 80% there. Fine-tuning is quick.

Is the free tier enough for a full-time teacher, or will I hit the generation limits by midweek?

Free got me through most weeks last semester. I only upgraded when I started using Raina heavily for parent emails.
